Post-Partum Parentage
Families come in all shapes and sizes but Georgia Law only automatically gave legal rights to one kind- married couples who then had children. For parents who get married after the baby is born, the Office of Vital Records needs to get involved and if done improperly, so does the court.
My clients Maria* and Howard* got married a few years after Gigi* was born. They filled out the forms to have him added to the birth certificate. It’s a single form that has over 40 boxes ready for information. They turned it in and got the updated birth certificate for their daughter. Howard was listed as the father on the birth certificate but Maria was suddenly a year younger and born in Oklahoma instead of Oaxaca.
This year, Maria found out about the mistakes while applying for citizenship. One superior court petition later, Maria can finally get citizenship with no hiccups.
I’m a great referral for parents who want things done right the first time.
